Description

The Uradale jumper Shoormal is knitted using organic, un-dyed and un-bleached Shetland wool from Uradale Farm in Shetland.

Shoormal, Shetland dialect for the high water mark on a beach, describes the mid-grey shade of the wool. Undyed yarn retains more lanolin and is thereby softer, stronger and more water resistant than dyed yarns.

This unisex jumper features a rolled crew neck with ribbed cuff and hem.

The Native Shetland Sheep on Uradale Farm belong to a native breed  which have lived on Shetland, an island in the far north of Scotland, for over 5000 years. From neolithic times their wool has protected generations of islanders and in order to survive, this ancient breed has had to evolve and adapt to conditions there.  The sheep roam freely over the heathery hills and grassy valleys down to the seaweed on the beaches.  They can stay outside year round thanks to two layers of fleece - the longer outer layer acting as a water repellent, and the inner layer of fine wool keeping them warm.  It is the fine wool which is spun into yarn for our jumpers.

Uradale Farm has been certified fully organic by the Scottish Organic producers Association for over 25 years. No artificial fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides are used and the land has been protected by environmental management to encourage biodiversity.  There is a noticeable increase in the numbers of breeding birds that have returned to the area, particularly curlew, snipe, plover, oystercatcher and peewit.  Many flowering herbs and orchids bring colour in the summertime and the bumble bee population is also growing in number.
