Description
Limited edition, luxury handwoven wool scarf in Shetland Black, made exclusively for our store.
We are delighted to have these beautiful, hand woven scarves on our shelves which are the result of a special collaboration with Newburgh Handloom weavers in Fife. This intricately designed limited edition Shetland Black wool scarf has been lovingly hand woven on a traditional Thomas Kennedy loom built around 1905.
Woven using a special blend of natural, un-dyed Shetland and British lambswool yarn spun by Jamiesons of Shetland, which is soft to touch. The Shetland dark brown black has been paired with a Mooskit a pale oat colour in this scarf. Each scarf is individually woven with a finished edge which makes for slower weaving, but produces a higher quality product.
With an eye on our carbon footprint, all the production has taken place at the Newburgh Handloom Weavers studio, including the final stages of washing and finishing. The fringes are knotted by hand.
Handwoven by Erika Douglas in the weaving shed of Newburgh Handloom Weavers in Fife, originally founded by handloom weaver Jimmy Hutchison. Erika's Thomas Kennedy traditional wooden loom is non-mechanised, and works by one hand throwing the shuttle, the other hand beating the cloth and both feet working the treadles to change the shed. This type of loom was common pre-1920s and requires a great deal of skill to produce an even cloth.
Handwoven in Scotland.
