Description

Spun from pure un-dyed Hebridean sheep fleece, this 4 ply knitting wool hails from the island of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides, from a herd of seafaring sheep.

Mòine-dhon which translates to Peaty Brown from Gaelic is a natural warm, dark brown yarn that reflects the peaty moors of the east coast of the Uist islands where the sheep live.

The Hebrides islands were settled by Vikings circa 800 AD and they brought along with them their sheep. In time this primitive and hardy Norse sheep evolved, travelled a bit and inter-bred, resulting in the Hebridean sheep this yarn comes from. Given the Northern ancestry of the Hebridean sheep, their fleeces produce a yarn that is particularly warm, perfect for cosy sweaters, gloves and hats.

This particular herd of seafaring sheep are transported from the croft on Berneray to islands in the Harris Sound for summer grazing via boat.

Per ball: 50g / 150 meters of pure Hebridean wool, semi worsted. We would recommend knitting as 4 Ply on 3.5mm needles. Please hand wash with care.
