EDINBURGH FESTIVAL TALKS

MEET THE MAKERS!

As part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival we are delighted to be hosting two talks on the endangered art of kiltmaking, exploring the heritage of the traditional Scottish garment through a contemporary lens. Andrea Chappell from ACME Atelier and the DYE, WEAVE, PLEAT collective will be speaking about their work on consecutive days.  A micro exhibition of their kilts is currently on display in store.

Monday 17 August 6 pm - 7 pm

WHAT MAKES A KILT? Andrea Chappell, ACME Atelier

Contemporary kiltmaker Andrea Chappell explores the practice of kiltmaking, looking at traditional pleating techniques and their contemporary translations. Based in Moray in the North East of Scotland, Andrea's kilts focus on incorporating vintage fabrics and deadstock alongside classic tartans and heritage tweeds in a slow and sustainable means of making that upholds the traditional hand stitched method, now listed as an endangered craft. Andrea's kilts will be on display at our store.

The DYE WEAVE PLEAT Collaboration

An innovative collaboration of three textile traditions in Scotland; natural dyeing, hand weaving and hand stitched kiltmaking, each one an endangered craft practice. Cavan Jayne (Cavan Jayne McPherson, colourist, Glasgow), VEVAR (Chantal Allen and Christopher McEvoy, hand weavers, Glasgow) and Acme Atelier (Andrea Chappell, bespoke kiltmaker, Forres). In this talk each maker will take you through their individual practice and the process of combining their crafts together, blending their heritage skills to create contemporary kilts. Hear about what worked, what didn't and what's next.
